Upload an image, set the quality and download an AVIF file - often the smallest option for photos on the web.

What is AVIF?

AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. For photos it is often even smaller than WebP at similar quality, and all current major browsers can display it. Encoding takes more work, so this converter needs a browser that can create AVIF files, such as current Chrome or Edge.

How to convert to AVIF

  1. Upload a JPG or PNG image.
  2. Set the quality with the slider.
  3. Wait a moment while your browser encodes the AVIF.
  4. Download the AVIF file, and keep a WebP or JPG fallback for older browsers.

Related checks

AVIF can only be created in browsers that support encoding it (current Chrome and Edge do). Many sites serve AVIF with a WebP or JPG fallback inside a <picture> element. Check the result on your pages with the Image Optimization Checker.

Frequently Asked Questions

For photos AVIF is often 20-30% smaller than WebP at similar quality. It takes longer to encode and is slightly less widely supported, so many sites offer AVIF first and WebP as a fallback.

Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari (16 and later) display AVIF. Older browsers need a fallback image.

Creating AVIF files needs browser support for AVIF encoding. If your browser cannot do it, try a current version of Chrome or Edge, or use the WebP Converter instead.
