Modern browsers use the PNG files from your <link> tags. A favicon.ico in the site root is still a good fallback for old browsers and some tools that request /favicon.ico directly.

Browsers cache favicons aggressively. Open the site in a private window or clear the cache; adding a version to the file name (favicon-v2.png) also forces a refresh.
