What is a domain registrar?

A domain registrar is the company, accredited by the domain's registry, through which a domain name is registered and renewed - GoDaddy, Namecheap and Cloudflare are common examples. The registrar is where the domain's nameservers are set and where it is renewed or unlocked for a transfer. It is often a different company from the web host that stores the website's files.
