The checker reads the domain's public registration record over RDAP and looks in the registrant details for the signs of a privacy or proxy service, such as "Redacted for Privacy", WhoisGuard, Domains By Proxy or Contact Privacy. Protected means the owner's personal contact details are hidden or replaced by the service's own; not protected means the registrant fields appear to contain real contact data. Since GDPR, many registrars redact personal data by default, so a protected result does not necessarily mean the owner bought a privacy add-on.
