How is domain age calculated?

Domain age is the time since the domain was first registered, taken from the creation date in the registry's public RDAP or WHOIS record. It counts from registration, not from when a website first went live, and it is not reset when the domain is transferred or sold - only when a domain fully expires, is deleted and is registered again from scratch.

How to check the age of a domain

  1. Enter the domain name, for example example.com, in the box above.
  2. Click Check Age.
  3. Read the registration date and the calculated age in the result.
  4. Before buying an older domain, also review its past content and backlinks - age on its own does not guarantee a clean history.

Related checks

Domain age is calculated directly from the domain's original registration date in public WHOIS/RDAP records, not from when a website was first published on it - a domain can be registered for years before anyone builds a site on it, or can change hands (and content) many times while keeping its original, older registration date. It's worth knowing that Google has repeatedly stated domain age itself is not a significant direct ranking factor - older domains often rank well simply because they've had more time to accumulate real backlinks and content, not because of their age alone. JustChecker tracks domain registration data automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Age alone is not a ranking factor. Older sites often rank well because they have had years to earn links and content, not because of the date itself.

A brand-new domain behind a big online shop or an "established" business can be a warning sign of a scam. When buying a used domain, age plus a clean history adds value.

If it expires and is registered again by someone else, the record usually shows the new creation date - the earlier history is no longer visible here.
