What does a WHOIS lookup show?

A WHOIS lookup returns a domain's public registration record: the registrar it is registered through, the dates it was registered, last updated and expires on, its status codes and its nameservers. This tool queries the modern RDAP service first and falls back to WHOIS when needed.

How to look up who a domain is registered with

  1. Enter the domain, for example example.com, in the box above.
  2. Click WHOIS Lookup.
  3. Check the registrar, creation date and expiry date.
  4. Owner contact details are often hidden by privacy protection - to reach the owner, contact the registrar or use the site's own contact page.

The record shows when it expires and who the registrar is. Some owners list domains on marketplaces; otherwise contact them through the registrar or wait to see if it lapses.
