Enter a domain to fetch its registration data over RDAP; if the registry does not offer RDAP yet, the lookup falls back to classic WHOIS.

What is RDAP?

RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the structured, JSON-based successor to WHOIS, run by domain registries. It returns the same registration facts - registrar, dates, status and nameservers - in a consistent format. This lookup uses RDAP and falls back to WHOIS for registries that do not support it yet.

How to run an RDAP lookup

  1. Enter the domain in the box above.
  2. Click RDAP Lookup.
  3. Read the registrar, event dates (registration, expiration, last changed) and status codes.
  4. Status codes such as clientTransferProhibited are normal locks that protect the domain from unauthorised transfers.

Frequently Asked Questions

RDAP returns the same kind of registration data but in a standard structured format over HTTPS, with consistent field names and better support for privacy rules. WHOIS returns free-form text that differs by registry.

All generic extensions such as .com and .org do, and most country-code ones are adding it. For the rest this tool automatically falls back to WHOIS.

Registries sometimes publish more detail in one than the other, and timestamps may be formatted differently. The key dates and registrar should match.
